Cycling Hand Signals You Should Know

Whether you’re riding alone or with a group, it’s important to know the right hand signals so that you can alert others ahead of time.  

Learn these hand signals to keep you and others around you safe! Do note that these hand signals are suited for left hand drive countries.

Raise your hand above your head to indicate you are expecting to stop. If the stop is sudden, remember to call out ‘Stopping!’ to notify everyone around you.

When riding in a group, it’s always good to indicate when you are slowing down. This helps to avoid cyclists accidentally riding into your wheel from behind.

Extend your left arm outwards to indicate making a left turn. Be it at a traffic stop or adjacent lane, you should always indicate when you expect a change in travel direction.

Similarly, a right turn should be indicated ahead of time when you expect a change in travel direction.

Unnoticed potholes are extremely dangerous and could easily cause an accident. Be kind and remember to point out any potholes or obstructions to alert cyclists behind you.

This signal is frequently used when you’re riding at the front of the group, pulling the pack. Whether you’ve completed your pull or getting too tired – flick your elbow outwards to let riders behind relieve you.

Don’t forget to acknowledge when an oncoming vehicle lets you pass first. A thumbs up or a smile goes a long way on the road!
